Indiana Catholic Conference Statement on Ruling Claiming Abortion is a Religious Right

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS (March 7, 2026) Indiana Catholic Conference Executive Director, Alexander Mingus, issued the following statement in response to the Marion County Superior Court judge's March 5 ruling that abortion is a religious right protected by Indiana's religious freedom law.

"Indiana's religious freedom laws were passed for the purpose of protecting religious practice, not to protect the ending of a human life. Religions that preach violence are not protected by religious freedom claims. While the court's decision is disappointing, the Catholic Church in Indiana remains committed to upholding the dignity of all life and concretely supporting women with difficult pregnancies."
