ICAN Liaison Description

The Indiana Catholic Conference (ICC) is the “Public Policy Voice of the Catholic Church in Indiana.” It strives to lead Catholic efforts to advocate for, and when appropriate, against public policy according to the Church’s perennial teaching as guided by the Archbishop and the four bishops of Indiana. An integral part of this mission is the education and empowerment of the lay faithful in the state through communication which encourages faithful participation in the political process.

The Indiana Catholic Action Network (ICAN) is the principal mode of communication for the Indiana Catholic Conference. ICAN informs and updates the faithful on the Church’s social teachings and legislative priorities. This network is only effective insofar as it reaches the faithful in the state and inspires their participation in the political process.

In a world of constant digital communication bombardment, the ICC is competing for the attention of thousands of Catholics in the state. The ICC is tasked with formulating and communicating an authentic interpretation of the Church’s moral teaching while bringing that teaching to bear on the concrete policy proposals in the Indiana General Assembly. Singularly inviting the faithful to participate in the state’s political process is an impossible task for the limited staff of the ICC. However, with assistance from a strong network of parish and institution-based contacts in the form of ICAN Liaisons, the ICC might achieve a more effective and timely dissemination of legislative and catechetical materials throughout the state. In other words, the ICAN Liaison will act as a bridge of information between the parish/institutional community and the ICC.

Role of the ICAN Liaison

The ICAN Liaison can either be appointed or can volunteer; whichever is more suitable for the parish/institution. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about sharing the fullness of the Church’s teaching while answering the call to political action. He/she will also look forward to sharing information with their church family and community. Additionally, the ICAN Liaison should be familiar with and able to navigate the communication channels within the parish/institution.

Duties

The ICAN Liaison will be expected to monitor the Indiana Catholic Conference’s communications both during and after each year’s meeting of the Indiana General Assembly. In consultation with the pastor and other parish administrators, the ICAN Liaison may share relevant information from the Indiana Catholic Conference through the parish’s communication channels (bulletin, website, social media, etc.).

The ICAN Liaison is not permitted to share any information on behalf of the ICC other than official statements and publications from the ICC.

The final approval of each ICAN Liaison is subject to the approval of the corresponding parish pastor or administrator.
